Celebrated painter Nicole Eisenman hosted a incredible figure drawing workshop with the Lower Eastside Girls Club this past Friday after school! She introduced us to her practice, paintings and inspired us on the eve of the inauguration. We created art together, learned how to draw from life with a traditional figure model, and kept the positivity flowing in the midst of an uncertain transition. With such a talented group of high school girls, Nicole really guided a formal workshop and made it a ton of fun! We loved sharing our figures with each other pose-after-pose and Nicole even invited a special guest and renown poet Ariana Raines for an impromptu poetry reading. Much love to Nicole Eisenman for hosting such a special after school Wide Rainbow Workshop with us!!
We are absolutely thrilled that Nicole Eisenman will be hosting a Wide Rainbow Workshop Today after school with the Lower Eastside Girls Club on Ave D. MoMA Curator Lucy Gallun gave our high school girls from the Lower Eastside Girls Club a thoughtful Wide Rainbow Walkthrough of Nan Goldin 's prolific photography and explained the premise for her slide show The Ballad of Sexual Dependency which was first exhibited throughout Lower Manhattan in the 1980s. All the images on view at MoMA in this exhibition documented her personal experience and captured a generation/moment with romance, sorrow, and an intimate point of view! Thank you Lucy for sharing this poignant exhibition with the Lower Eastside Girls Club today after school!
TMW after school curator Lucy Gallun will be giving some of our high school girls from the Lower Eastside Girls Club an intimate tour of Nan Goldin's somber and celebrated slide-show The Ballad of Sexual Dependency at MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art). Sarah Crowner and her stellar assistant (sowing master) Kelsey prepared a 2++ part workshop with the Lower Eastside Girls Club yesterday after school. Sarah gave a great presentation and even brought in one of her own paintings as an example to inspire the girls to paint, cut, stretch, sow, and build there own works of art!!! They all began by painting loosely on various swatches of fabric and thank goodness that summer sun was out, because we took them to dry quickly on the roof and then moved from the art studio to the sowing room. After building our own wooden stretchers we then had Sarah's assistant Kelsey give a little sowing tutorial to everyone and with an amazing room filled with multiple sowing machines, needles, thread and everything you could image we were able to cut up our painted canvases and re-organized them to into new compositions. Next step was to sow them together and then stretch the canvas over the wooden stretchers to create cool paintings like Sarah Crowner's own work!!! Take a look at all the fun works of art and constructed 'paintings' we made yesterday during her super Wide Rainbow Workshop on Ave D!!!
Contemporary artist Sarah Crowner will introduce canvas, stretchers, and evening some sowing to emulate the abstract + configured paintings she creates with the Lower Eastside Girls Club on today after school. We will be looking forward to an afternoon of painting, stretching and building our own works of art with a few sowing machines and lots of imagination!!!
Francesca Dimattio gave us a wonderful presentation of her multi-dimensional, layered paintings and intensely intricate sculptures to inspire some young artists today at the Lower Eastside Girls Club. She also created a collaborative 'exquisite corpse' activity where the girls collaged figures (head, body, feet) with different materials and mediums to create exquisite layered works of art!!! Look at all the fun creatures and artworks we made during her stelar Wide Rainbow Workshop!
We are looking forward to another awesome after school Wide Rainbow Workshop TMW with the multi-dimensional sculptor, painter, and very cool contemporary artist Francesca DiMattio at the Lower Eastside Girls Club. Check out some of her larger than life 'domestic' sculptures and insanely intricate paintings from past exhibitions at her gallery Salon 94 on the Bowery and get inspired!!
Thank you Francesca & Salon 94 for participating with Wide Rainbow!!!!
After school today the Lower Eastside Girls Club joined artist Betty Tompkins at her celebrated exhibition 'WOMEN Words, Phrases, and Stories' at the Flag Art Foundation in Chelsea. It was an unbridled exhibition that stirred up a lot of thoughts and questions about how we define 'WOMEN'. The good, bad, the ugly and the powerful, strong, and beautiful! With over 1,000 paintings of words describing 'women' the girls were quite inspired and even contributed some future thoughts to Betty's next project! Thanks Betty and everyone at Flag Art Foundation for having us!!!!
Yesterday after-school the Lower Eastside Girls Club had an uninterrupted drawing (not-doddling 😜🌀) session with contemporary artist Joanne Greenbaum!! Joanne brought in some amazing artist books from her studio and own home to share with the girls for inspiration as well as gave an intimate conversation about her practice, works of art, and shared even shared amazing slideshow of paintings + recent exhibitions to get everyone in the abstract drawing groove. Take a look at some of the artworks and drawings that were created as well as the collaborative books between the artist herself and one very confident young artist from the girls club on Ave D!!
