Maria Sol Escobar, known as Marisol, was a Venezuelan-American artist who worked in New York City. Marisol fused Pop Art imagery with folk art into her own theatrical sculptures. She constructed carved wooden figures decorated with drawings, fabric and found objects through the 1960s and was included in major museum exhibitions around the world. Her clever assemblage sculptures were inspired by fellow pop artists, celebrities, and as portraits of her time.

Workshop

We will create sculptures and portraits of family members, friends, or famous people that inspire us today with recycled cardboard materials.

1. Gather cardboard materials before recycling them : Egg cartons, cereal boxes, packages, etc.
2. Find at least 3 block-like shapes from your recycled cardboard materials for the head, body, and legs of your sculpture.
3. Color, decorate, and embellish each block or shape to make your portrait unique!
4. Think of all sides of the object and special details that expresses who your subject is.
5. Finish by stacking & gluing together each 3D block or shape (head, body, legs) on top of each other to create sculptures inspired by artist Marisol!
