Workshop

Let’s create mini-monuments remembering past loved ones in our own families and in history inspired by Maya Lin’s memorials.

1. Think of someone who has passed away that you would like to memorialize or honor
2. Go outside and find a special rock or stone
3. With paint or a permanent marker write the name of the person you’d like to remember
4. Present & share your mini-monument with your family, friends, or classmates and explain who the person you chose was and why they were important to you
5. Find a special place or site in your home for your mini-monument to live. Honoring that special loved one

Materials

  • Found rock, stone or natural object

  • Permanent Marker

  • Paint

  • Brushes

Follow Up

Who did you choose to remember? Why?
How did the stone or rock you chose change when you wrote that person’s name on it?
Do you think it is important for us to remember past loved ones?
How did it make you feel to think of someone who had past away?
Where did you end up putting your mini-monument? Why did you choose that space?
